Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing \u201cBest in Business\u201d Awards<\/h3>\n

STAT won three awards in the small division<\/a>: general excellence for \u201csharp, original, and tough business coverage\u201d; best newsletter for Bob Herman\u2019s Health Care Inc.<\/a>; and health\/science for Jason Mast\u2019s story on how the CRISPR boom went bust<\/a>, which also received an honorable mention in the feature category.<\/p>\n

STAT won four national Murrow Awards<\/a> in the small digital division. The \u201cCoercive Care<\/a>\u201d series, by Eric Boodman, was recognized for both excellence in writing and feature reporting; the \u201cEmbedded Bias<\/a>\u201d series, by Usha Lee McFarling and Katie Palmer, won for excellence in diversity, equity and inclusion; and the \u201cHealth Care\u2019s Colossus<\/a>\u201d series, by Bob Herman, Tara Bannow, Casey Ross, and Lizzy Lawrence, won for investigative reporting.<\/p>\n

Barlett and Steele Awards for Investigative Business Journalism<\/h3>\n

STAT\u2019s Health Care\u2019s Colossus series<\/a> won silver in the global\/national category<\/a>. \u201cThe reporters convinced dozens of employees to take them behind the scenes into a scheme that cost taxpayers billions. This impactful series caught a company paying itself higher prices, found executives intentionally padding results, and exposed a bait-and-switch of massive scale,\u201d said the judges.<\/p>\n

STAT reporters Casey Ross and Bob Herman were named 2024 Pulitzer Prize Finalists in Investigative Reporting for highlighting the dangers of AI use in medicine. Through their reporting, Casey and Bob exposed how UnitedHealth Group, the nation\u2019s largest health insurer, used an unregulated algorithm to override clinicians\u2019 judgement and deny care for patients. The Society of Professional Journalists<\/a> honored STAT with two 2023 Sigma Delta Chi Awards for excellence in journalism. STAT was honored as the top Specialized Journalism Site, and Casey Ross and Bob Herman were honored in Business\/Finance Reporting for their series Denied by AI<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting<\/h3>\n

Usha Lee McFarling received the award<\/a> for exposing and explaining racial disparities in health care and her dedication to mentoring the next generation of journalists.<\/p>\n

Evert Clark\/Seth Payne Award<\/h3>\n

Jason Mast won the annual prize for a young science journalist<\/a> for his reporting on the science, business decisions, and ethical conundrums of getting genetic medicines to people in need.<\/p>\n

Bernard Lo MD Award in Bioethics<\/h3>\n

Usha Lee McFarling won the 2024 award<\/a> from the Greenwall Foundation for her role in shaping the public discussion and policy debate about bioethics and equity in health care and research.<\/p>\n

Asian American Journalists Association Awards<\/h3>\n

Usha Lee McFarling won in the Excellence in Science \/ Environment \/ Health Reporting<\/a> category for coverage of Asian American health disparities.<\/p>\n

National Headliner Awards<\/h3>\n

Casey Ross and Bob Herman won first place<\/a> in the online investigative reporting for digital-only website category for their series \u201cDenied by AI: Consequences for Sick and Vulnerable Americans.\u201d Nicholas Florko won third place in the online beat reporting health and science category for his story on how medical marijuana companies are using pharma\u2019s sales tactics<\/a> with little of the same scrutiny.<\/p>\n

Bob Herman won in the health\/science category in the medium division for his investigation into rampant conflicts of interest between PBMs and consulting firms<\/a>. Herman and Casey Ross received an honorable mention in the same category for their investigation into how Medicare Advantage plans use AI<\/a> to cut off care for seniors in need.<\/p>\n

Tara Bannow received an honorable mention in the feature category, medium division, for her story on how the country\u2019s biggest hospital chain took over a storied hospital system in North Carolina<\/a>, a move that negatively impacted patient care.<\/p>\n

Editor & Publisher EPPY Awards<\/h3>\n

STAT won for best business\/finance website<\/a> (small division), and placed second for best online-only news website (small division). It placed second for best investigative\/enterprise feature (small division) for Eric Boodman\u2019s \u201cCoercive Care: For decades, physicians have steered sickle cell patient toward sterilization<\/a>\u201d and placed third in that category for Lev Facher\u2019s \u201cThe War on Recovery<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The investigative series by Casey Ross and Bob Herman looked at how UnitedHealth used secret, algorithm-based rules<\/a> to make critical \u2014 and often devastating \u2014 health care coverage decisions.<\/p>\n

STAT won third place in the consumer feature (large) category for the Obesity Revolution series<\/a>. Casey Ross and Bob Herman won second place in the investigative (large) category for their Denied by AI series, and Herman received an honorable mention in the business category for his story on how opaque conflicts of interest permeate prescription drug benefits<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2023<\/h2>\n

Edward R. Murrow Awards<\/h3>\n

STAT was recognized with the national Murrow Award for excellence in diversity, equity and inclusion<\/a> in the large digital news organization category. Three stories on inequality in medicine by Usha Lee McFarling and Angus Chen were honored. Stories included the challenges faced by Black medical residents<\/a>, breast cancer disparities in clinical trials<\/a>, and racial differences in pulse oximeter accuracy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

News & Documentary Emmy Awards<\/h3>\n

The STAT documentary \u201cAugmented<\/a>,\u201d directed by Matthew Orr and produced with NOVA, received a national Emmy nomination<\/a> in the \u201cOutstanding Science and Technology Documentary\u201d category.<\/p>\n

WAN-IFRA Digital Media Awards Americas<\/h3>\n

STAT was honored for best news website<\/a>, and was also the small or local company winner in that category. STAT also won the award for best digital subscription initiative from a small or local company.<\/p>\n

American Association for Cancer Research<\/h3>\n

Angus Chen and Nicholas St. Fleur won the AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism<\/a> in the online\/multimedia category. Chen won for a story on a trust-building cancer center director<\/a> reaching out in marginalized neighborhoods. St. Fleur won for a story on Chadwick Boseman\u2019s colorectal cancer<\/a> and its wider implications for young Black men.<\/p>\n

Editor & Publisher EPPY Awards<\/h3>\n

STAT won best business reporting for an Allison DeAngelis story on data integrity issues at a biotech startup<\/a>. We were honored for best website redesign\/relaunch<\/a> in the small division, and were finalists in the small division for best investigative\/enterprise feature, a look at how Medicare Advantage plans use algorithms to cut off care<\/a>.<\/p>\n

ASME National Magazine Awards<\/h3>\n

STAT was a finalist for general excellence from the American Society of Magazine Editors<\/a>. Nicholas Florko was a finalist in public interest for \u201cDeath Sentence,\u201d an investigation into the lack of care for incarcerated people with Hepatitis C<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Livingston Awards<\/h3>\n

Nicholas Florko was a national reporting finalist<\/a> for this University of Michigan award for the best journalists under 35. He investigated the prisons\u2019 policy to treat incarcerated people with hepatitis C.<\/p>\n

NIHCM Awards<\/h3>\n

For the general circulation journalism award<\/a>, Angus Chen was a finalist for a story on cancer patients dying while on a waiting list<\/a>. STAT\u2019s Casey Ross and MIT\u2019s Adam Yala, Janice Yang and Ludvig Karstens were finalists for exposing AI dangers with patient data<\/a>. J. Emory Parker was a finalist for the digital media award for a piece on 1 million U.S. Covid deaths<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Online News Association Awards<\/h3>\n

Usha Lee McFarling was a finalist in the topical reporting: race, gender, and identity category (medium newsroom) for her series of stories on racism in medicine<\/a> and the dire consequences.<\/p>\n

Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing \u201cBest in Business\u201d Awards<\/h3>\n

Katie Palmer, Mario Aguilar and J. Emory Parker received an honorable mention in data journalism, small division, for a data-driven investigation of the FDA breakthrough medical device program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lev Facher received an honorable mention in health\/science, small division, for a story of how a D.C. power couple used an ALS diagnosis<\/a> to create a political juggernaut.<\/p>\n

A collaboration of The Markup and STAT received an honorable mention in investigative, small division, for \u201cPixel Hunt,\u201d a look at the privacy implications of website tracking pixels<\/a> used on health care sites.<\/p>\n

2022<\/h2>\n

George Polk Awards<\/h3>\n

Adam Feuerstein, Matthew Herper, and Damian Garde won the George Polk Award<\/a> in the medical reporting category. Their investigation found that Biogen used an FDA back channel to win approval for Aduhelm, a costly treatment for Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Edward R. Murrow Awards<\/h3>\n

STAT was recognized with the national Murrow Award<\/a> for excellence in writing in the large digital news organization category for Eric Boodman\u2019s story, \u201cHow medicine erased Black women from a \u2018white man\u2019s disease\u2019<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
